The evolution of display technology over the past two decades presents a fascinating technical contradiction. While we have achieved staggering densities in spatial resolution and peak luminance, we have simultaneously experienced a quantifiable regression in temporal resolution. As a Senior Technical Journalist covering display architectures, it is imperative to dissect why a high-end 2026 OLED panel can often appear ‘muddier’ during fast-motion sequences than a 20-year-old Panasonic Plasma or a Sony Trinitron CRT.

The culprit is the fundamental transition from ‘impulse-based’ to ‘persistence-based’ (sample-and-hold) light delivery. In a CRT, the electron gun strikes a phosphor which glows briefly and then decays. The image exists for only a fraction of the frame’s duration.

This creates a natural gap that aligns with how the human visual system processes motion, effectively resetting the retina between updates. Modern LCD and OLED panels, however, hold a frame’s image statically until the next refresh cycle occurs. Even with an instantaneous pixel response time (GtG), the human eye, as it tracks an object across the screen, smears that static image across the retina.

This is known as persistence-based motion blur.

To quantify this, we must look at Motion Picture Response Time (MPRT). At a standard 60Hz refresh rate, a sample-and-hold display has an MPRT of 16.7ms, regardless of how fast the pixels can change color. Even at 120Hz, we are still looking at 8.3ms of persistence.

In contrast, a CRT or Plasma might have an effective MPRT of less than 2ms. To combat this, manufacturers have introduced high refresh rates and Motion Interpolation—the latter often derided as the ‘soap opera effect’ due to the artifacts and unnatural fluidity it introduces via predictive frame generation.

Another attempt to bridge this gap is Black Frame Insertion (BFI), which strobes the backlight or the pixels themselves to mimic an impulse display. However, reducing the ‘on-time’ of pixels (the duty cycle) inevitably leads to a massive hit in peak brightness—often by 50% or more—making it a poor trade-off for HDR content. Furthermore, the low-frequency strobing required for 60Hz content can induce significant eye strain and visible flicker for many users.

Until the industry prioritizes high-luminance impulse-based driving or reaches refresh rates in the 1000Hz range to naturally minimize persistence, the legacy technologies of the past will continue to hold the crown for true motion clarity. As architects of visual data, we must recognize that resolution is not merely about the number of pixels on a static grid, but how those pixels maintain their integrity through time.
