Meta Explores Space-Based Solar Power for AI Data Centers

Meta has chosen a radical solution, “space-based solar power,” to meet the surging power demands of its expanding AI data centers. This project, pursued in collaboration with Overview Energy, involves positioning satellites in geostationary orbit to continuously collect solar energy, 24/7. The collected energy will then be transmitted to ground-based solar power facilities in the form of near-infrared lasers.

The ground facilities will immediately convert the received light into electricity and supply it to the data centers.

The most significant advantage of this technology is its ability to provide continuous power supply, regardless of weather conditions or the time of day. By overcoming the intermittency limitations of existing ground-based solar power, Meta can reliably secure the massive energy required for training large AI models while maintaining its carbon-neutral goals. Furthermore, it maximizes efficiency by leveraging existing infrastructure without the need to secure new large-scale sites or construct additional complex terrestrial power grids.

Meta’s move is a symbolic example of the competition for power to support AI calculations expanding beyond Earth and into space, foreshadowing a seismic shift in the future of the energy industry.
